i left the house on saturday afternoon to return to a masacare in my tank!!

i had 5 guppys, a pair of dwarf gouramis and 2 three spotted gouramis.

they have all been together for just over 2 months. (did a fishless cycle a before ading any fish)

i retuned home sunday evening to 5 dead guppys a dead femail dwarf gourami and a very very sick looking male dwarf gourami. (i really dont think ge is going to make it) things were going so well!!

the three spotted gouramis are absolutly fine, they look healthy and colourful. could these be capable of such atrocitys? i checked the water peramiters and there was a spike of amonia but evey thing else was normal. could the amonia spike be because of the dead fish been in there or something else

i retrieved the dead and did about a 30% water change, should i be doing anything else?
any advice is greatly welcome!!

bad times!!

Really sorry to hear that... I don't know anything about Three Spotted Gourami (btw the plural of Gourami is Gourami ;) ) so can't comment. Without having seen them being agressive and attacking their tank mates I'm not sure that it's fair to assume that they were the cause. Especially as there is another possible cause, unless of cause it is found that they're nasty types.

EDIT: I just did a quick google search and came back with this from http://animal-world.com/encyclo/fresh/anab...bluegourami.php

The Three-spot Gourami, like all the variants of this species, are generally considered good community fish when small but they are not as peaceful as the other gouramis. They have been known to attack smaller fish. They can also get belligerent or territorial when they get large.

yeah its a strange, one a bit sad really just as everthing was seeming to be going so well and i was thinking about adding a couple of corys to add some life to the bottom of the tank but im gonna hold off from doing that untill im confdent the water is stable again.

thank you mr tastic that might explain a couple of things. i never knew they could be such nasty buggers!

Out of interest what are the sex of the spotted Gourami. My two female Moonlights attacked and killed the female dwarf Blue but left the male. The rest of the community tank which includes 3 (male) platy's have been left alone. The female Bala shark is too big for them to pick on. Could be just a jelousy thing? Either way it's still upsetting when it happens. Sorry for your loss. :(

yeah im pretty sure they are girls, i wish i would have knowne before i got them that they could turn nasty!

Yes, I think my post down in the middle of this Bobtastic thread has some bits about the 3-spot gourami. Its the older name for the Blue Gourami and all the variations, Opaline (green) and Golds are the most aggressive of the different types of gouramis. You may have just experienced how they get those type reputations.

here's the thread:

(was from a search so I hope the like works for you, not sure..)
