Hi all,

I am hoping someone can help with the identification of some inhabitants of my new tropical marine tank.

I set up the tank in the middle of February this year with coral sand, RO water and some live rock. I have since added a Cleaner Shrimp, two Turbo Snails and two Percula Clownfish. Various inhabitants arrived with the live rock including several Bristle Worms (one recently deceased), a Sea Urchin and Two Crabs.

My question relates to the vegetation growing on the live rocks. I have a colony of white tube like growths with bright green ends, some dark red moss like material and a peculiar pink organism. Can any one help with their identification and tell me whether they are good or bad and if undesirable how I might be able to get rid of them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

I wasn't able to identify your hitchhikers but when I looked at your pictures (nicely taken might I add :p ) I noticed it looks like you have Bubble Algae on your rocks. Do you have an emerald crab at the moment?

Hi Danno,

As far as I know I only have two crabs at the moment, one very small (0.7cm across) with what looks like a soft shell and is light grey/brown in colour. The other is larger but I have only ever seen bits of it as it retreats back into the live rock. As I am very new to this fascinating hobby I really do not yet know what an Emerald Crab is, or whether I should or shouldn't have one but I certainly do have Bubble Algae, it was one of the first organisms to appear as the tank matured. Is it good?

Nic.

Bubble Algae is considered a pest algae. Emerald Crabs eat it. You could pick one up if your tank partimeters are all in align.

Wow, never seen those green/white lookin things... The first one is a type of red macroalgae. Keep an eye on it, some red macros grow FAST. Does the pink thing move or stay put?

Seems to stay put - at the moment! There is a second one just to the right of it in the picture, heading off at a slightly different angle.

Ok well you've got there what looks like cheato algae, then in the next pic some colonial tunicates. The white/yellow tubes are a type of macro algae, commonly reffered to as "banana" algae, although I dont know the latin name.
