Hi everyone, I'm new to fish keeping and recently added some more fish to my 120litre community tank. I followed the advice of the guy at the local aquatics centre, and currently have the following fish (with no intention of adding any more):

2 Copper Rasbora
2 White cloud mountain minnow
3 Platy
4 Black Widow Tetra
2 Bristlenose Plecs
2 Golden Gourami

The Plecs and Gourami's are young and still very small but I realise they'll get bigger. Tank doesn't seem overcrowded at the moment and there isn't any problem with aggressive fish - Gourami's chase each other but there's no biting and they seem to take it in turns as to who is the chaser so I wonder if it's just play. My question is will there still be enough room when the Plecs and Gourami get bigger, or will I have to start putting some in a different tank?

Thanks in advance!

in theory yes but the stock is messed up the minimum for schooling fish is 6 bare min at 5 you have 3 species of 2, 2 and 4. the tank is to so for one pleco so yea youl probaly need to upgrtade to a bigger tank in my opinion to keep the  plecs and gouramis and 75 gallon maybe more.

Welcome to the forum :) I always cringe when I read someone followed advice from a shop :/ I know its bad but its true, shop people are not always the best resource on how to stock your tank.

I do how ever disagree with Ncguppy on the tank upgrade... I think all those fish are perfectly manageable in a 30 gallon tank. I would rehome the more aggressive Gourami in the tank though as having 2 will cause problems if you have 2 of the same gender or a dominant male with a sub dom female...

I think the BNs will be fine so long as you are good on your maintenance as they do poop a lot!! The alternative would be to remove these and add in a smaller species of catfish in higher numbers, something like a bigish school of something like Panda Cories

I do agree with him on the schooling fish though and that may be where some work is needed but I think you have space. If it were my tank I would probably have the stock like this

1 x Golden Gourami
3 x Platy
8 x Copper Rasbora      OR      8 x Black Widow Tetras
2 x Bristlenose Plecs

I always think the best communities of 30gs are with a centre fish or two of a reasonable size like the Gourami, with one big mid water shoa, like the Rasboras and a big bottom dwelling school like the Cories I mentioned - in this situation I think the 3 Platy are a good stop gap from the second feature fish I mentioned.

I would remove the White Cloud Minnows as they actually need lower temperatures than most tropical tanks can provide. And the other two schooling fish you have will make better choices for the tank.

Please dont be disheartened by all this, we have all been led astray by fish store workers, and all though there are some fantastic people working in the industry out there - there is a vast amount of people who, although in some cases with good intentions, will always give out bad advice...
