I've just bought 5 glass fish and I was sucked into buying them as they looked so nice.

Here is a pic I found on the Internet which looks like the ones I've bought.

My newbie question is, are these dyed or painted glass fish?

I ask because I can't find any species information on them.
:dunno:

Hi quatermass, introduce yourself in Newbies

I'm afraid they are dyed fish. :( They are injected with dye all along the dorsal and ventral surface, as you see in the picture. :(

The dye weakens the immune system and causes damage and poisoning to several vital organs.

The natural form of the glassfish should be completely clear. You may find that they do not survive as long as you may think, because of the damage that occurs below the sub-dermis of the skin. If they do live for a reasonable time, you may find that the dyed colour fades.

Sorry to break the news. :(

There is a database of dyed fish at Death By Dyeing you might find helpful.

Yup, sorry but they are. You didn't know though, so don't feel bad and now you do know you can keep an eye one them more. You could alos speak to the shop you got them from in case they don't know.

:hi: to the foums as well by the way.

I have those exact same fish not died though, they are called glass perch here. So yep as with other comments they are died I'm afraid

I made the same mistake of buying a strawberry and blueberry tetra about a month ago. So far they seem very healthy and active. They're colors have not started to fade yet, but I'm sure they will. I hope they can live a normal life.
