As subject, are Malaysian Trumpet Snails hardy or at least as hardy as the two types of uninvited snails I have residing in my cycling tank? I wanted to get some MTS to churn the sand over but wondered if I should wait until the tank is fully cycled. The other varities seem to be doing just fine judging by the tens that I have to remove each day! The second species has a flat shell and have basically taken over the wood in the tank. They must have came in with some plants I bought last week.

I can say that I rarely see an empty MTS shell laying around in my tank whereas, pond snails and ramshorns regulary leave empty shells laying around when they die. Of course, MTS like to forage around in the substrate so maybe when they die, their shells are buried. Mine seem to grow slower than the pond snails or ramshorns in my tanks.

How did you end up with the other snails in your tank if it isn't finished cycling? Are you fishless cycling or cycling with fish?

I'm fishless cycling at the moment. There are pond snails and the flatish ones (Ramshorn I believe) which must have come in via the plants. The pond snails were easy to control, I just took them out when I saw them but the ramshorns are taking over at the minute!

Go here http://www.fishforums.net/Snail-species-t75554.html to help identify your snails. I don't think ramshorns would be considered "flatish". Let us know what you have.

Adding plants to a fishless cycle is not a part of the normal routine. It will actually interfere with your fishless cycle since the plants will consume some of the ammonia you are adding while trying to grow a big N-bacteria colony. Are you planning on having your tank planted or did you just buy a few plants on a whim?

Going by that link, I would say it is pond snails and ramshorn snails.

The tank is planted but not heavily, going by some of the setups on here. I'm on my second cycle as first time around, my autofeeder failed to drop flake in to keep the ammonia going into the tank while I was away. I've started again and it's going much faster this time around and yesterday I added a sponge filter from my brother's tank to the filter to see if that speeds it up a bit. The ammonia is disappearing sharpish at the moment but the nitrites aren't dropping (yet!).

A Final answer to your question:

I recently lost all my fish and shrimp when my second hand cheapo needle valve decided to unload a full cannister of CO2 into the tank in the space of ???? hours (I was at work)

Virtually all the MTS are still in there now although they were all on their backs looking dead when I was fishing them out with the dead fish, but after an hour or so in the bucket I was removing them to (there are loads so it was taking a while to remove them) I saw that they were climbing the sides of the bucket, so back in they went
