I've kept three Orientalis for a year now

I was feeding them last night in their tank which had a water change for first time in weeks the day before

2 of the Orientalis were feeding as normal but the one with most colour on its fins wasn#t hanging round the top of the tank

I noticed that its throat seemed to bulge a little and was dark in colouration,Its the extendable part of the throat. the other twos throat region was the same light colour as their bodies. I watched for ages to see if I could see in his mouth but no chance it was sealed shut

I've not seen any spawning behaviur all I have noticed is one of them has stayed in a cave a fair bit and now hes like this

Have they bred do you think?

I believe that they are mouth brooders, lets hope yours have bred.

Cheers, Karl

fingers crossed eh Karl!!

Thing is the tanks not as it should be at moment cos there is a couple of khulis, corys and an L264 plec in there I need to move but never got round to doing it, Its my sons tank and its the one that tends to get "neglected" if you know what I mean

He was hid in the floating plantst his morning so couldn't really check on him

Looks like they have bred again cos the one I assume is the male is holding something in his mout which is bound to be eggs?

are channa eggs tiny? I only ask as I thought I saw inhis mouth and saw what appeared to be tiny eggs in there. so unline mouthbrooding cichlids I have which have larger eggs in there

apparently yep they are mouth brooders, and when the male is holding eggs he spends his time hanging near to, if not at the waters surface. And are meant to release the fry through the gills and do so when they feel the fry are capable of looking after themselves. Personally i think it would be a similar scenario to neils ornates as far as parental care goes. But as far as i can work out the male hanging at the surface with a full gob is a very good sign! Good luck!

sounding good simonas :good: yes i also think my sp assam's are holding at present, spoke with mod col who i got them from and he seems to think smae, around 7days before you see anything, i know there different but all similar once eggs have hatched, they grow quick and iam going to feed mine again on deshelled brine shrimp eggs if anything comes of it :good:
My pair are in with a half banded eel, i was panicing as cannot catch the git without distroying and possibally upseting the assam's...col recon's that the parents will keep him away, as one has been doing the last few days, where before the halfband and assams would lay on the floor togehter now if it shows its face its chase off time....
