Hi,

Is an arcadia overtank luminiere sufficient to stop fish from jumping from teh tank, or is some other kind of glass lid required?

I was looking at a video on youtube by Practical Fish Keeping where they build a nano tank with an arcadia overtank light, but no lid. They have a fire goby in there, which appears to be a known tank jumper. The arcadia light is big and covers most (all?) of the hood of the tank but obviously it's lifted off the tank so there are gaps at the side of the light. I am wondering if this would still cause problems with fish being able to escape.

You want to use what's called "eggcrate". It's used in industrial flourescent fixtures to protect the bulbs. Don't use glass or you'll have heat problems

Jumping fish can be a real concern. My clowns have jumped into the rear filter chambers of my nano on a number of occasions and is a real PITA trying to get them out again. Hate to think of them ending up on the floor though...especially with the cats around!

you could also maybe find a fine plastic mesh to attach to the perimeter of the light unit as a kind of skirt. I wouldn't impede on the light into the tank BUT could be more of a pain to attach in such a way as to keep easy access to the tank.

Just a thought

Cheers

ive just been thinking about this. i of course plan to use glass lids as my lfs gives them free of charge to its customers who buy tanks from him custome built. i was thinking bout my overflow though and im sure its highly unlikely but im looking at possibly attaching some sort of stocking or something over the box so that no fish can get through. not sure, ill have to look into possible dye leaks etc problems.
