I work away for a few weeks at a time and although my wife feeds and looks after the fish whilst I am away I was thinking it would be cool if I could set up a wifi webcam in my tank that I can view when I am away.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to what hardware and software I might need?

an easy way would just to have your wife put a webcam by the tank....

or if you want to be able to look remotely by yourself you can try something like this....

http://www.yawcam.com/

plugged in my logitech c920 (which i bought for setting up in front of aquarium) and downloaded yawcam after seeing this thread earlier today.

will need to see if i can change the focus somehow...if it is back a metre or two, its looks out of focus...so i need to have the camera reasonably close to the tank, so cannot get the whole thing in (but does look lovely filling the screen top to bottom).

yawcam seems to only want to stream at 1920x1080 with this webcam, which is fine for local viewing but i doubt my internets upload speed will be happy about that.

There's plenty of software out there other than yawcam if it's not doing what you want. Just google around for some 'diy security camera software' and what-not :) Pretend you're looking for some CCTV software that supports a webcam. It will have all the features you want plus a few extra :)

Also if you have an old Android device, you can use that too with some apps from the Google Playstore, much smaller, cheaper to run and easier to set up.

Do all these options require you to have it plugged into a computer 24/7?  I was wanting something wireless wifi ones that I could connect to my router?  Is that possible?

sounds like you want a network camera then...which was the thread i created a few days ago
