When choosing an aquarium, would it be better to get a tank that is longer and wider, or a tank that is deeper?
which might be more benificial for keeping fish? and which one may look better?

All depends on what type of fish you want, cichlid i would go for a High deep tank, neons i would go for a long tank.

Unless you want to keep ciclids like angelfish or discus which require a tall tank, a long and widde tank is better because it has a larger surface area, allowing you to keep more fish.

i was planning on breeding guppies, and getting rid of some of the fry but keeping most and splitting them between 2 tanks

If your cichlid is an angelfish, yes this is true. Most, if not all other cichlids should have a long tank that is more shallow.
