Afternoon all,

I'm making a couple of slate caves and want to know what type of silicone sealant is safe to use.

I've found some 'aquarium' stuff at £4 for 25g, but surely this is the same as standard silicone sealant and I'm paying more for the word "aquarium" on the box?

Any silicone which does not contain anything else (like mould killing stuff) should be fine. I think it costs 3 pounds or so on eBay per tube.

+1.

Although I've always been too scared to use it as I can never remember the chemicals that you don't want in it.

this is my concern, none of them appar to show any ingredient lists. Think I might just pay the extra to be sure.

I can vouch for this stuff on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HA6-RTV-MARINE-SILICONE-AQUARIUM-WATER-TANK-SEALANT-/320613273105?pt=UK_Crafts_Cardmaking_Scrapbooking_Glue_Tape_EH&var=&hash=item76bf83e05c
I've used it with no ill effects on my fish whatsoever - it's just over a fiver with postage, but it's a full size tube.

ZZ; the stuff you've linked to says 'mould resistant';that' means it's almost certainly got a fungicide added.

Resealing tanks is a PITA at the best of times; you don't want to have to strip it all off and do it again 'cos you've used the wrong stuff! A big tube of the proper aquarium sealant isn't that expensive, though you will need a mastic gun as well.

it's only for a making a little slate cave or two. Therefore a 25g tube (at £4) of the 'proper' stuff should be sufficient.....just didn't want to be ripped off (like I was when I bought the slate from a LFS - schoolboy error!)

Take it back. Get a big bag of plum or green slate in homebase for £6 I think.
Also states on it that its "fish safe" I'm assuming its pond safe but with a good scrub it should be grand.

And of course, don't forget to post some photos of the finished product.

It's still not suitable though, because it contains algaecides and fungicides, which are toxic to fish and aquarium plants.

If you want a small tube, why not just go for aquarium silicone? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/310323254116 It's only 50p more and won't harm your pets.

that's exactly what I purchased 2mins ago......but it's £3.99, not 50p????

EDIT - ooops, 50p MORE! Sorry.
