Does anyone know if it is safe to use the aquarium sand in your tank with dwarf frogs? I have read on Petsmart customer reviews that people say it is hard to rinse off that it takes along time to rinse it off and that it takes a long time to let your filter run before your tank clears does anyone have any experience with this? I was thinking about getting some but I didn't want to have to wait all day before I could put my frogs back in there. I wanted to just take them out while I put it in and than put the frogs right back in. Maybe I will just have to use something else. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

i recently changed a 30gallon over to sand i emptied all the water from the tank and gave the sand a good rinse in a bucket under a running tap untill the water ran clear in the bucket. when refilling the tank i used the plate method so the sand wasnt stirred up. there was no clouding of the water and once i adjusted the temp i put the fish straight back in the only problem i had was a small ammonia and nitrite spike caused by removing the mature gravel substrate.

Thanks for the info! Do you happen to remember what brand name of sand it was that you used? If not that's ok I was just wondering. This one person on the reviews I read said it took six hours to rinse it off good so I wasn't sure about that. It sounds like you didn't have that much of a problem with it so I think I will go ahead and try it out. I don't have anything in the bottom at all of the tank right now so I will just drain the water and put the sand in after I was it off and than just put the same water back in and see what happens I guess. Thanks for letting me know about your experience with it I appreciate it!

Hello again! No I guess we don't have a argos here I never heard of it before. We do have LOWES and Home Depot and they both have play sand for kids. I haven't thought about that kind I will have to check it out. Thanks again for all the info and help.

the playsand that lowes carries has sticks and animal feces in it for fertilizer it will rape your tank water. grodey huh? i used este's ultra reef marine and/or freshwater aquarium sand some pet stores carry it. and you dont have to rinse it it comes pre rinsed you just got to soak it for about an hour. if you want to see what it looks like in a tank look in my topic "finished 55 gallon remodelling". its in the old world cihlid section. its a newer topic should be at the top. :D

Thanks for letting me know about the sand at lowes I figured the ones at the pet stores must be safe or they wouldn't sale it for aquariums I will see if petsmart that is where I go for everything, I will see if they have the sand your talking about I know they have more than just one kind, I want the kind you used not the kind you have to work hard on rinsing off. Thanks for all the info! I will go the the old world cihlid section and check out your tank.

I have sand in both of my FW tanks and did not have a problem with cloudiness or my filter. My levels did rise a little due to the mature substrate. I used this white marine sand from Petco. http://www.petco.com/product/7534/Nature-s-Ocean-Marine-White-Sand.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch

I rinsed heavily as I was not sure how much salt was in the mix. It looks great and is a beautiful white. I can thank my girlfriend for finding it for me.

Thank you for letting me know. I will see if Petsmart has that just because it's alot closer to where I live but if not I will go to Petco.

I never heard that Lowes' play sand was contaminated. The member who had that experience should report them to consumer affairs or the board of health. This is a product sold for use by children and is should be safe.

I've always used play sand from Home Depot, just because it is closer to my home. The way to insure the sand is rinsed properly is to rinse it in small batches and keep changing water until it runs entirely clear when it is stirred well. It's not a big deal to rinse sand but if you do a sloppy job of it, the results will be evident when you add it to your tank.

Thanks for the info. I have a Home Depot and Lowes that are just as close as Petsmart is to where I am so I will just take a look at all of it and do some more research on everything. I am not sure if I want to put anything at all in the tank or not. The reason I don't have anything on the bottom right now is because I was affraid the dwarf frogs might swallow something when they eat there food I have tried using a plate to put there food on but it just floats off the plate. I just thought that sand would be the easiest if I did put something on bottom.

i had dwarf frogs in with sand and gravel never had any problems with them swallowing anything theres a lot of people who use play sand personally i wouldnt waste money buying sand from a pet store when play sand is just as good and much cheaper

Thanks for letting me know I would rather save money and get the play sand. I guess I worry too much about them swallowing the small pebbles that I did have in there. I appreciate your help.
