Please excuse my ignorance but is this just a money making ploy and is there any difference between aquarium silicon and normal bathroom silicon. My thinking is that once the normal silicon has cured/gone hard it should be fine to use in an aquarium and is about half the price !

My reason for asking is I've had a nightmare trying to attach my new diy background into my partially full tank (didn't realise just how bouyant polystyrene is   ) so i'm opting to silicon it in place.

cheers

normal silicon will contain solvents and fungasides which is dangerous 2 fish proper aqaurium silicon doesnt contain either :)

but I believe even aquarium silicon won't work against a damp surface, so you are still fighting a losing battle with your partially filled tank. Your gonna have to drain it I think :)

Bathroom silicone is indeed loaded with fungicides but plain silicone that is not marked as resistant to fungus is generally quite safe to use. In the US it is the way that door and window silicone sealant is made.
