Hi,
I am a keen tinkerer!
most chances i get, I will try and build a custom alternative to a shop bought product. (sad i know!)
I usually save a bit of cash and learn allot in the process. And if the thing ever breaks you can easily fix it.
But I find when trying to make bits for my tanks i am constantly restricted by a limited knowledge of aquarium safe materials.

The ones i know of are -

Plastics
Perspex / Acrylic sheet
ABS
Nylon?
PVC

Metals
Stainless steel (A2 for freshwater, A4 for saltwater)
Titanium

Glass
Any

Timber
Only LFS selection, bogwood, roots etc

Stone / Ceramics etc
Teracotta
Play sand
Pea gravel
Flint
Shells
Slate

Adhesives
Hot glue
Super Glue
PVC pipe cement
Epoxy Resin when fully cured
100% silicone / Aquarium silicone
Possibly Gorilla Glue

Paints
Not a clue!
I think acrylics may be OK?

If anyone disagrees with any of these or has any to add! plz let me know.

Thx,

I know that Hammerite is tank safe once it's been thoroughly dried.

Wow that is surprising,
Hemmerite smells like some fairly toxic stuff when your using it!
Have you used the spray or the tinned stuff you put on with a brush?

Yep, hot glue is OK to use, I think some of the cheaper brands are worth avoiding. but the majority are known to be safe.
Although personally i would always try and use silicone instead, much better hold and more flexible.

I've never actually used Hammerite myself, but my ex BF did in marine tanks with no problems (he's good on chemistry and engineering).

You do have to let it cure totally before you put it in!
