is the coarse black sponge a carbon filter? is it particularily neccessary or would it be better to use something else in its place?

any help with any general improvements would be much appreciated?

i have an additional internal filter to go with it, the Aquaone 102f. just trying to get my water as clean as possible.

Yeh i would keep the carbon filter pads, you may want to add bio balls, these should make the fitler better. :good:

Hi, the coarse black sponge is exactly that, a coarse filter media, the carbon filter media will either be a finer looking black sponge or a bag of carbon pieces, in this tank you should have a black coarse filter pad, then fine white filter pad, then ceramic noodles at the bottom (probably not enough room for bio balls) in the first divide, then on the second divide, you should have another coarse a fine white filter pad, then carbon pad or pieces, then a coarse filter pad on the bottom.
Hope this helps

Firstly, the black foam is NOT carbon.

In my aquaone 850 I use this method in each of its 2 chambers.
In the bottom....1" of coarse foam media
On top of that a layer of ceramic tubes (noodles)
On top of them a quarter inch of fine foam media
Finally on the top a layer of fine white woolen foam

In the chamber where the water flows back into the tank I have another square of coarse foam to quieten the gurgling.

I rinse all the white wool every couple of days under the tap to remove poo etc. The rest I rinse in OLD TANK WATER (to preserve the bacteria) once a month (One month do one chamber then the next month do the other chamber, Never do all at the same time) :good: As you can see in my signiture...crystal clear
