Hi All,

Having moved house a couple of years ago, I now wanted to start up an aquarium and therefore greatly appreciate some advice! Previously, I had a Jewel 180 for many years but now due to space was thinking of something smaller.

After some research, had decided on the Aqua One AR620 (90 litres), but having gone to local aquatics retailer this morning came across the Askoll range, specifically the Askoll Pure XL (90 litres). Admittedly, I haven’t come this range previously but the tank and set-up seemed reasonable, although was told the filtration was not as good as the AR620 and unsure whether an external filter good be added.

Can anyone advice as to which of these would be the better tank to start again? I'm planning on stocking smaller tropical fish, such as neon’s etc.

Thanks in advance for your help and please let me know if you require any further information.

Hiya mate, welcome to the forum. :)

I have owned the Aqua One AR620 and can vouch for them 100%. The cabinets are extremely well made and the tanks are very well designed with the curved corners. Never heard or seen the Askoll so can't comment on them.

Others for you to consider would be the Fluval Roma 90/125 and the Juwel Rio 125/Lido 120.

External filters are 99% better as they free up more space in the tank, offer greater filtration and a huge surface area of filter media that can deal with more bacteria.

HTH.

David.

I would also say the AR or now called aqua one aquastyle 620 as it has a excellent built in filter and i wanted to get that tank but its the 620T version. You would need to change something called the carbon cartridge once a month as that absobs waste and wont be doing its job after that :shout: :good:

Hi Dave / Zain,

Thank you so much for the response and advice its greatly appreciated and very glad to hear that the aquastyle 620 seems to be an excellent choice to start back! Agree that the filtration system seems easy to maintain and hassle free and its reassuring that the filter provided is sufficient an therefore no need for anoother external filter to supplement.

Out of interest Dave, the Fluval Roma 90 has an internal filter and therefore I'm thinking if this tank was purchased you would recommend buying an external filter? As previously, with the Juwel 125 & 180, I found the filter replacement a hassle!

I'm assuming a aquaone heater (100w) would do the job or are there any that you guys would recommend? Also, for holiday periods (~ 2 weeks) which automatic feeder would you guys recommend as previous feeders kept on getting the food stuck!

Thank again for the help :good:

Hiya mate, juwel internals can be removed with a sharp knife. The lighting is better on the 125/180. :good:

The Roma would probably come with a Fluval U2 internal. They're a decent filter, but externals are better.

With heaters, 1w per litre is advised, so a 100w would be fine. Aqua one are good heaters, as are juwel, interpet, elite, eheim, rena etc etc etc.

No idea on auto feeders. Fish would go 2 week without food if you needed them to.

I may get the aquastyle 980 soon and i did read up that most of the tank maintenance happens above the aquauium so it doesnt bother the fish.

Heres a website who only deal with aqua one and they have videos reviewing on stuff on the tanks or filter:
