Anyone got any good ideas for removing Aptasia while i'm transferring Live rock between tanks? I know most of the tricks for in-tank remedies but i'm wondering if there's a better way while the live rock is out of the tank?

I don't think you'll be able to get it with tweezers because you'll most likely end up riping it inhalf and it growing back anyway. Unless you have hundreds of them, the damage caused to your LR when burhing the aiptasia with a car cigerette lighter will be very very small.

What about just using JJ's

:D

Tweeze that sucker and you'll end up with a million of 'em. You'd either have to chip off the piece of rock they are attached on...or do as above....Best thing would be to treat it topically out of the tank..vinegar....JJ's...lemone juice...etc...one area of LR won't destroy the whole piece. I actually cut off an arm of a coral to get one off. SH

Wow, prunning a coral to remove apstasia, thats dedication! I tried the vinegar. Didnt work. Every time i tried to inject them they would retract. Plus, you cant always get at awkwadly positioned aps with a 10cm syringe. :X

Use Joes Juice. So much easier. My fight for control continues, cause I cant reach everyone. Zapping you lr piece by piece whilst adding it sounds the go! :)

Cheers guys, I think i'll try vinegar while the live rock's out the tank as it will be easier to find their holes.

and greg803................they will overrun your tank

Also read on RC that Tabasco sauce works

If you're taking the rock out of the tank anyway, use a lighter. Not a car cigarrette lighter, a match or butane or barbeque lighter. Thats what I used, and they never came back. Just torched 'em till the rock around them was a little black, then scrubbed the dead anemone and black colouring off. Worked great for me.

Joes Juice is a product that you can buy that kills Aptasia anenomes.

I've decided that all out war is called for.................

I'm going with a combination of:
  • Malt Vinegar Injections
  • Milliput Capping
  • Gas Soldering Iron Scorching
  • Peppermint Shrimps (When back in the tank)
If there's any left they deserve to stay :p

I've tried peppermint shrimp in my tank to get rid of the aptasias but it didn't work. The shrimp didn't go near them. I've tried injecting them with scalding hot water too but they always retract and I couldn't get them.
Today I got fed up and took the rocks out that had the aptasias on them. I took the rocks to my sink and turned on the hot water so that a small stream came out and directed it right on those suckers one at a time. I didn't blast the whole rock with hot water, just the area where the pests were. I think it worked.
If that didn't work I'm gonna try kalk paste next. That's supposed to work really well.
