So this past week I was at a conference in Austin, Texas, staying at the Radisson Hotel. Good news is that they had at least three freshwater fish tanks up and running. The bad news, and don't say you didn't see this coming, is that they were overstocked, with fish far too large for their small homes, and the fish that were there were in poor health and clearly stressed. (As an example, the electric yellow labs were a pale daffodil instead of the brilliant yellow they are named for.)

Anyway, in the tank in front of the elevators, there was a very very large catfish, a very dark blue color. It has to have been at least two feet long. I do not have a picture, unfortunately, but I was wondering if anyone might have an idea as to what fish this may be?

Thanks in advance.

Could it have been a black shark? Or was it deffinately a catfish?

It could have been, I dont have much experience with fish that get too big... Opaline Gouramis are about the biggest for me ;).

It must have been 1) very peaceful as I watch it for some time between conference sessions and I never saw it eat another fish, and there were plenty small enough to easily fit in its mouth and 2) fairly unhappy ... it barely had room to turn around and the total length of the tank was maybe 4 or at the most 5 times as long as it was.
