Apple Snails

I have just been given some apple snails (thanks Lesley ) wanted to know if they require any special care?

i have ordered some calcium blocks (release over 2 weeks apparently) theres fresh veg in the tank daily (shrimps and cories too)

Any thing else they need?

They sound like they'll be very happy snails! They do need a way to reach the water suface as they breathe atmospheric air; they lay their eggs above the water line too

I have read on here that you can use Tums indigestion relief tablets as a source of calcium eith no ill effect to the fish in the tank.

Yep that was me, have fed over 1000+ apples with tums and their shells look fantastic, infact i have yet to see a better looking golden then the ones i have

I'm jealous I love apple snails. What do you do with the tums? Just pop one in the tank and leave it? Does it dissolve or float to the bottom. My fish eat anything are you sure it would be ok if they nibbled? I'm gonna try this because my one apple snail looks crap

tums are a great source of clacium for the snails. they love them and they dont pollute the tank.
snials are great. ive got various snails in all my tanks

I've recently acquired some lovely new Apple snails and I am sooo happy with them! I have also just bought a large pair on e-bay for a friend whose children desperately want some to add to their tank. For myself I have a large breeding pair, a medium pair, plus two smaller,- all Golden. Then I also have 3 gorgeous Purple Apples. Mine are particularly fond of cucumber and lettuce

Dont be jealous do you know how much poo 1000+ snails make in 24 hrs? water changes every 2 days, bakeing them cookies for hours on end lol

Tums are fine the fish dont even bother with now, they will sink to the bottem in my tank they will only last about 20 min but if i put in about 10 tablets i may have 1 left which will dissolve in the tank water and the snails will absorb it later.

A tablet has 300mg of calium in it
