Can anyone who owns or previously owned Apple Snails confirm for me as to whether there plant eaters or not. I've heared a lot of conflicting views.

Thanks

Hi,

It all depends on what type it is. Cannas will definately eat every plant in the tank. Brigs don't touch plants. Spixis will eat plants as babies, but don't seem to bother as they get bigger. Have a look at www.applesnail.net to see how to tell the snails apart.

Emma :)

Ok well the snail I was looking as purchasing is labelled as Pomacea Bridgesii (Blue Apple Snail), so I presume it wont touch plants?

Furthermore how much room do they need, is a 15-20 gal tank enough to hold on?

Could you just outline a few characteristics of the species and what requirements they have?

Thanks

www.applesnail.net is a fantastic place to gather information on ornamental snails.

General rule of thumb is about 2 gallons per snail. I have three brigs in my 20g at the moment. Be careful though, as they do reproduce sexually, so keeping more than one is likely to produce offspring.

There are many different varieties of apple snails, and that's why you hear conflicting views. Some do, and some don't. Brigs generally don't, as they can only eat soft things, so a healthy plant leaf is too tough for them to eat.

edit: also, pinned to the top of this forum is a thread called "Species of Snails" (http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=75554), which covers the basics rather well.
