I put 3 Golden Apple Snail eggs into my tank last Sunday, i've seen a couple of them locked together the last few days. I've never had any in an aquarium before so just wanted somoene to confirm what im looking at and how i should go about caring for them. Im not keen on a billion of them in the tank so wanted to know if its wise to remove them now and perhaps transfer them elsewhere? Any info appreciated really :) Ta

What i'd really like to know is if these guys are likely to destroy all my plants! The Adults havnt touched them so far.

DOH, i didnt realise there was a forum dedicated to these things, if an op can move that would be great, ta :)

Pretty sure apple snail eggs require brackish conditions to hatch?

So I don't think you'll get any babies...

no they can i hatch i had a clutch of eggs tht hatched a couple days ago

well....if they lay them out of the water does it matter what its like? /confused now!

LOL, good point. Littlemonkey has thousands mate, i was astounded to see all the egg clusters.

She advised me not to do anything really to care for them. Fertile eggs will aparently have black dots in them.

Sorry they dont, my apples have given me over 1000+ apples snails now which i have about 100 left lol (sold the rest)

They will hatch in normal freshwater and that clutch will contain approx 200 snails, of which about 100-150 will survive. An adult apple snails need 2.5 Gallon to thrive so i would advise takeing the eggs of the side with a knife putting them in a small tuperware box and then freezer for 48hrs and dispose before they hatch if you cant look after them.

Regarding care if your ph is under 7 you can expect there shells to get weak and pit in 8-12 weeks so you will need to supply calcium to them. If its above PH7 pop a Tum(the tablets from boots) in their tank once every 3-4 weeks they will eat and gives a big boost to them. Wont effect fish in tank :good:

If you dont want anymore just remove the clutch. It's quite normal for them to lay this way. The clutch is not allways going to hatch anyway. Apple snails don't need brackish water, just good quality water and temp will do. So it's agood indication that's your water peram is stable. Dont worry about your plant's. My apple snails have never munched my plants, and I've got a few. :good:

Would adive on the side of cuation here i put 20 little un's in my planted and they had a chop on every single plant exept amazon swords and java moss. Dont wont any ones tank geting ruined as they DO eat plants. Little monkey no offence mate just dont want peoples plants gone yours must be well trained mate lol :good:

Don't know anything about breeding them but i just had to get rid of my three as they munched there way through all my plants, Even 90% of my java moss! Thankfully got them sold and scotty helped me get my plant collection back on track. Just seemed to be as soon as there was no cuecumber in their tank they wen't straight for the plants.

Well i dont mind giving them a chance at life, it would be intersting to see, i just dont want them escaping out of the tank and ending up all over the house! :) Thanks for the info, i'll read some more over the weekend :)

Lol don't worry, I've been corrected on the plant front. Mind you I must add that like plants in the garden, once a plant is established and leaves are mature, they are a bit too tough for the snails to munch, much prefering younger shoots. Hope that helps.

you are correct about that, thats why some snails wont eat cucumber as it too hard sometimes. I nuke mine in the micro for 40 sec let it cool and they can do a half 6inch cucumber in 24 hrs lol

I have about 10 apples in my 3ft planted tank, never have them touch the plants

Have 4 small ones in a nano planted, they dont touch the plants either

Not all apples are plant eaters...some are you just need to know which ones you are buying
