Does anyone have experience of breeding apple snails? I'm a bit of a worried mum to be

We have a group of 4 pink apple snails, they have started breeding and layed their first clutch of eggs in the top of the tank about 3wks ago.

They now have the tank to themselves and have so far left 4 large clutches of eggs in the lid of the tank. As yet, we havent had anything hatch, the eggs are quite moist up there, is that how they need to be?

Is there anything I can do to make sure they have the correct environment for hatching? I havent been able to find much info, how long do they generally take to hatch and do I need to put any special foods in when the babies emerge?

Thanks

Keep them moist, perhaps by spraying them a couple of times a day with water. They will hatch en masse and you'll wake up one morning and find hundreds of small snails! When I had them I found they would readily eat any foods offered to them.
I raised hundreds with relative ease

Thanks Chris, I was worrying thet they are too damp up there, condensation seems to form on them and then drip off. The tank is 30ltrs, temp 26, filtered with an LED lamp

They laid another lot last night, ontop of the filter, these seem very dry, so i'll spray them with tank water a few times a day

A clutch will have 200+ eggs in even if 50 survive you will have major problems, adult apples will need 2 gallons per snail min so maybe time to think ahead.

if you want to try raise some you can cut the clutch in half with a knife and discard the rest. Splash the eggs with tank water once a day they should be moist but not wet. Her 1st few clutch may be infertile anything over 28days i would prob discard. 14-21 days is about right to see little uns :good:

I would also pay attention to the pH being a small tank the snails will be fighting for minerals more so if baby's hatch

Hope that helps a bit

Can you cut the clutch and leave a quarter of em? Mine just laid a clutch. Thanks!

Yep you can cut and leave any amount of snails :good:

Oh cool, I can't wait to see them haha! For some reason, mine laid it right where the water from the filter comes out, so they're like under a waterfall. Is that okay for them??

Not ideal as they will constantly wet but moving the eggs and taking care involves allot care. I would let nature take it course

Alright, how would I go about doing it if they do it again next time?? I'll leave em be, but I might try if they lay a clutch there again!

will involve taking the eggs wrapping in moist kitchen roll on and placing them in sandwich bag while floating them on top of the water is the short version and need consent checking lol :good:

you can try lowering the waterline by half an inch to encourage the next batch

That sounds like an interesting thing experiment xD

Thank you very much for the info, dont worry about the room, we have far too many tanks, if we are successful with the hatching, I have a 180ltr they can have all to themselves, with maybe a few shrinp :good:

Will test the PH tomorrow when I do the Reef, thanks for the tip, i'll keep an eye on that.

They have been at it again today lol, there is a female above the waterline at the moment, wonder where she will pop them this time.

No problem happy to help.

How do you sex them?? o_O

Its fairly hard but you will have to take them out of the tank gently placing them upside down, with the right side (your right) facing more toward the ground than the left side, gently blow on them you want it to come out of it shell, on the top left you will see a penis sheath or not :)
