Looking to upgrade the filter on my 36 gallon since I need a new filter anyway for one of my 20 gallon tanks. I figured to put the 36's filter, which is a Penguin 200 biowheel HOB, on the 20 gallon & get something good for the 36.

The API nexx has many features that make it a good choice including the ease of cleaning & the modular factor makes it easisly up gradable...............supposedly anyway. The cost is very reasonable too, I've found them as cheap as $69.99 with free shipping.

Anyone have any experience with these filters? Should I buy a regular canister type filter instead? Is a 36 gallon too small for a canister filter anyway?

Here's a quick video showing the features:

I personally wouldn't buy that. The chambers only have media at the top and for such a big canister I'd wont it filled with media for bacs to grow. You'd be much better off getting something in the ehiem classic range and in leaving this company alone until they get their design right.

Just my two

these are a very new addition to the hobby so you might struggle to find people with actual experience.

based on this I'd opt for going for something that's tried and tested. A good external should run for years and until this one has had that time to be trialled, I'd go for a more known design and make.

Thanks, both of you. I just liked the modular design & the upgradeable factor but you're right, it's too new.

How about the Marineland C-Series Canister filters?

How about the Marineland C-Series Canister filters?

In the uk the marineland c-series is the tetratec ... Series models. I want one but they're really expensive :( if you get one I suggest ordering from amazon. Huge savings!!!

I will, thanks! I had no idea that the TetraTec was the same as the Marineland C-Series.......

The C-Series looks way cooler too. :shifty: I don't think they make one that does 70 gallons though, it's 30, 55, 100. I want to double the size of the tank's filtration but 100 seems a bit much size wise. The price jumps a bit too between the 2 models, $102 for the 55 gallon & $170 for the 100 gallon.

If the 100gallon version is the same as the tetratec 2400 then I'd leave well alone. For your 70gallon then maybe two 50gallon filters? (I think these are the tetra tec 1200) plently of evidence around that two running wont turn the tank into a washing machine.

I'm getting it for a 36 gallon, I just wanted double the turnover. Do you think the 50 gallon version would be good enough for a 36?

Since plenty of people in the uk have success using the 1200 in tanks of 180l (approx 47usg) then I'd say it was more than sufficient

Thanks again Juggler75, now would you choose a Marineland 220 or an Eheim ECCO Pro 2234 ???

The Eheim is rated for up to 60 gallons while the Marineland is rated for up to 55 gallons. The Eheim only does 132 gallons per hour while the Marineland does 220 gph.

.............and then there's the Fluval 306 which is supposedly good for up to 70 gallon tanks with 206 gallons per hour.

So which would you recommend, the Eheim, Fluval or Marineland (Tetra Tec)?

I say the Rena filstar Xp1. I swear it's so quiet!!! I have the xp2 on my 46g so the xp1 on your 36 would be good. It's easy to clean, theres no priming to restart, just a little wiggle to rid it off excess air. I like my xp3 on the 75g so much, I got the xp2 to replace my Penguin 350 biowheel.
