I've been racking my brain to try and remember what brand of filters these were. I bought one in the mid 1980's - I remember hating it in the end.

I remember it was a HOB filter, made out of green plastic, and the motor was this big black thing that slid onto the bottom on two rails. The motor had a little spinning magnetic disc on top which turned the impeller unit inside the filter.

The motor was big and it would get hot, and it was very easy to get the spinning magnet misaligned in which case the whole unit would vibrate and make a rattling noise - you had to slide the motor on the rails until it was lined up right.

Also it wasn't strong enough to prime itself - you had to dip the whole intake tube in the tank and make absolutely sure there were no air bubbles in it. I remember that part being particularly frustrating.

I also had an even older model of that filter which was made by the same company. It had been my uncles and dated back to the 1960's. It was made from clear plastic and had no waterfall, the return squirted a stream of water out of a little tube!

Was supersceded by the Whisper HOB filters which are still out today. At the time I thought the Whisper was a godsend because it had a self-contained motor and it self-primed! I suspect my old Whisper is probably still running on my sister's 29 gallon tank right now.
