Hi to all the dog lovers!

Can anyone recommend a good indoors house dog, that wont shed all over the carpets and eat furniture? We plan on walking the little guy every day but our backyard is fairly small.

Awwww, you have to teach it not to chew because if you're getting a puppy, it's inevitable! As for shedding, I think you're somewhat doomed there too ,my short haired dog is constantly shedding :dunno: I was going to suggest a Pekingese, I love them, they're so smart but they have long hair  Maybe a yorkie? They're more like a soft rat than a dog though  (sorry yorkie owners! :*) )

if you want a dog that doesn't shed, youre limited to certain small terriers (you'll have to do a little research), miniature schnauzers are another small dog that doesn't shed, miniature poodles and some poodle mixes, bischon frise (cute, but very dumb little dogs....). most smaller dogs will tend to be yippy or hyper, so will require training as soon as possible. they may be small dogs, but they will walk all over you same as a big dog if you let them. i have miniature pinshcer, and while she sheds, its about the length of and eyelash and really not noticeable around the house (ona white t shirt, yes, couch no). rat terriers and fox terriers are nice small dogs, shed minimully. chihuahuas same. yorkshire terriers and yorkie mixes. the list goes on.
most dogs will chew on stuff as pups, but you can train them not to. a better option, find a local shelter/rescue group that actually takes the time to find out about their dogs available, and find out its behaviors.

Hello Ken!
The maltese is a smallish dog (white) that dosen't shed and would love to be your companion. They are fun loving and polite, perhaps call your local shelter and tell them what you are looking for - often if they know that there is a great home out there they will keep an eye out for you and contact you when something suitable comes in. Really, they want to place who they can and often these small dogs are left after an older person dies - they need someone as much as you need them. :D

my cousins have a small poodle indoors (actually not sure if she's full poodle or a mix). she's absolutely adorable, and loves everyone. she's a good dog and was easily trained. only downside i see is she loves to exercise her right to bark.

Miniature schnauzer is what I was planning on getting before cost was an issue :-( They are the perfect size dog for a housedog and they are very smart to boot!!

That would be my suggestion too!!

Poodles are natorious nippers and they usually don't like small children, if this is an issue I don't know! :dunno:

Chiwawas are really shakey. I know a few people who have them and they YIP LIKE MAD and shake regardless of how comfortable they feel around newbies!! -_- :S

a shih tzu doesn't shed,
they have deeper voices so they aren't all yappy and annoying (sort of raspy but they don't bark much unles REALLY excited or aggrivated)
they are beautiful and comical dogs
they stay small but require brushing daily if you want their coat to stay soft and clean (they pick up things from the floor like a dust mop  )
they are a perfect choice and they love everyone if socialized
if not they can be little lap gaurd dogs ;)

Go to the nearest shelter and adopt a dog , You can even get an older one who will be past the chewing stage. A good mutt is smart and as loving as any pureberad dog. And giving a rescue dog a good home is just a nice thing to do , good for your karma too.

Raki, you must be connected to us by karma! We have someone from Animal Rescue Ireland coming to visit tomorrow night to introduce us to a lost dog, a jack russell (not so much of a house dog but they are inspecting the house and garden to see if its suitable) and to advise us on which of their dogs suits us best :)

Here's the ad, we couldnt resist!
I am looking for a home for a female JRT. She was found by a relation on mine but despite every effort she has not been claimed. She is around 1 year old and the friendliest little thing you would ever meet. Her tail NEVER stops.
She's a very pretty black and white dog and is house trained, wonderful on the lead and very well behaved. Not child or cat tested.
Can highly recommend this girl as a great companion.
She is spayed. Home Check would be required for any potential adoptees.

Will keep you updated!

Jack Russells can make awesome pets, but if you get this dog, make sure that you have a good activity schedule planned. Terriers and herding dogs especially need some sort of "job" to do in order to keep them from being destructive or anxious. They are so smart that they need something to keep their minds occupied or they will find their own outlets. Agility training is a great way to go with these guys, which doesn't even have to be done in a class, there are many ways to set-up a make shift obstacle course on your own. Also be prepared for digging. Terriers are bred to dig and it's in their instincts, so if they don't have significant exercise and stimulation, this is often the first thing that they resort to. They are fun dogs though, and very intelligent, I'm sure when you meet her, you'll know if she's the one for you! ;)

I highly recomend italian greyhounds, they are reccomended for people with allergies as small house pets and we love ours to death..they dont shed until they get older, never smell and are not chewers. The only things they do need though is lots of exercise, but I think you have that covered with daily walks. they are wonderful dogs with huge personalities..here is a picture of mine (not trying to hijack your post, just showing you what they look like)

Thanks so much to everyone for the suggestions! We had a visit from the Animal Welfare here in Dublin and they brought along Scamp, a real little carachter! She's about 1 year old, a JRT and is the happiest dog Ive ever met, and I've met a few!
