All of the ones that I know of are pretty sad. Also, all the bettas are huge.. doesn't that mean they are older?

Yea, from what i hear, bettas pretty much keep on growing throghout their lives, so unless those fish are listed as giants or half-giants, they are probably old breeder males that your lfs got on a disscount.
