Hey guys,
have a 10 gallon with 2 small halfbeaks 2 corys 1 african dwarf frog and thought i had a yoyo loach. he/she has always been active during the day scurring about. I seriously cant find it. I have moved the large piece of driftwood out of my tank and hes not there either. the tank is covered so he couldnt of gotten out. The only conclusion i can come to is he is either buried under the gravel (can they do that??and for hours?) or he died and the other fish ate him? (i cant imagine that happening in like 4 hours) like i said i saw him this morning...any advice or do i just have to wait and see :/ :-(

Check your filter!!! Seriously!!! A few years back one of mine got in my juwel internal. Didn't realise until I accidently poured him down the sink and watch him go down the plug hole!!! Took me an hour to get him out the U bend, he survived tho!!!

Well, I'm no expert but I was completely miffed the first time I did a water change after buying some zebra loaches. They hid for at least six hours! They're still skittish now whenever I do a water change - but it's reduced to about 45mins to an hour. So in answer to your question - yes, they can hide for hours.

Hope this helps.

Any sign of him/her yet?

It is amazing the small places they can get into. I had one hide inside of a piece of fake driftwood that had a small hole in it. I never thought they could get as far down in there as they do. I've also had one do a suicide leap out from the space between the powefilter outlet and the tank cover, it was under 1 inch wide. They can hide in the gravel, although I've not seen a yoyo do it (b. kubotai I've seen do it and they're similar).

Thank you for your support everyone,
I gave up last night because i was just getting frustrated, i woke up this morning and there he was!!! That crazy guy, i am glad someone pointed out that theirs hid during a water whange because i did about a 30 percent water change earlier that day so thats probably why he hid. Thanks for the input and support, and oh by the way checked the filter too he wasnt there but good thinking. I was so scared, thanks for the support :good: hes alive!!!

Yeh, they can be VERY lively fish but at the same time they can be VERY shy/timid under certain circumstances.
Most loaches are sociable and better off in big groups and definitely more confident when they're in a larger group

Thanks for all your help screamingdonkey, That is what scared me so much, he is usually VERY active and always looking for food, or staring at me. I am getting a 50 gallong tomorrow so once it is cycled i planned on getting more. What number should i keep them in? is male of female ratio going to be a problem? thanks for all your help

I'm no expert on Yo-Yos but I'd say a small group should bring out the best in their behaviour.
I'm pretty sure there'll be some in-fighting as they establish a social structure but nothing too serious.
And make sure you provide some hiding places.

Try looking on loaches.com (or just Google) for Botia Almorhae for more info
