Hello,
This is my first attempt at setting up a tank. I would like to get some input on what other members on the forum think so far. I attached a photo of my tank. There are no fishes in the tank yet. I was thinking about just starting off with some platys.

Starting off with a few platies is a good idea but first fishless cycle the tank (read the appropriate link in my signature). Also, make sure that, if you do end up with platies, you realise that a mixed sex group will produce fry and quickly over-run your tank. Make sure you have somewhere (idealy your LFS) to offload them to. Also, they should be kept at a ratio of 2 or more females per male. Alternatively, avoid the fry issue by getting only males. Males also stay smaller and, therefore, you can keep more of them.

Nicely setup.
The tank is fairly new to have fish in them, this is because you need to establish the biological cycle so the new fish can survive in. Otherwise, your new fish may suffer (and I am sure your first fish will be the special ones). Also wondering how many gallons is your new tank?
It looks like a 29G, but I am not sure. Other than that, it looks very nice.
Platy will be a nice fish to add, you may want to look over some other ones also, like Zebra Danio might be a good bunch to look into. They are cheaper than platy and you can buy in school of 5 or 6 and from my experience I think they (Danio's) are stronger in tolerance than platy. Because this is a fairly new tank, start off with few fish and over-time add more.

Good-Luck with your new tank. I have been thinking of buying a new tank, but waiting till I get some extra cash in hand.

Take care.

The gravel that you used.....is it crushed crystals? I was thinking of buying those for a tank I am planning to setup, but someone told me they are expensive compare to gravel rocks. How much was the gravel to cover the new tank?

If you don't decide to do a fishless cycle, wait for a week before you add any fish to the tank. I see that there are still bubbles on the side of the tank, which means you just set it up, and chlorine needs to be taken out.

Yes i am planning on starting the fishless cycle tomorrow. I can't wait!. I will not be adding any fishes until i get the chemistry all worked out. Thanks for your help!

Oh man! I just looked again at your tank and realized that this is bigger than a 29G (just took a nap and my head is not thinking clearly). That picture of the tank gotta be atleast 50G, but let me know.

Thanks.

Thanks for the comments....About the gravel I am not sure actually. Its called Natural Aqua Gravel by Estes. I paid about 3 bucks a bag, not too bad!. Also I have a 55G tank.

Take care!
