I have been keeping fish for a few years now and have 4 tanks, the largest is a Jewel vision 180 litres.

It is a planted tank and after some moving around between the tanks it will be home to 5 odessa barbs and 4 cories. But I would like to turn it into a rainbow tank.

Can anyone suggest what types of rainbow fish I could keep? I have previously kept dwarf rainbows and threadfin ones but would be keen to try more medium sized fish.

Also my LFS is quite limited so I may need to travel further afield. Although they do stock some nice blue rainbow fish which they say dont grow too big.

Hi! Your tank puts you at the bare minimum for a group of the medium sized rainbows. There are many varieties out there, but like you said, you will probably have to search for them. The question you should be asking is what rainbows do you like? I could recommend many different species, but that would do little good if I don't know anything about your particular taste :)

A good place to start would be to visit this website found here.

You could do a lovely colony of the smaller Rainbows in a 180...

Celebes
Neon Dwarf
Forktail Blue-Eye
Threadfin

I believe all the above need 5+ in the group to be "happy." Unless a group is going to six or more, the general concensus from reading about them is that it should be a same sex group, but in 6+ schools the male:female ratio varies from 1:1 to 1:3
