Any reason not to buy a bigger filter?

I bought my 10 gal tank from wal mart and it came with a filter, hood, heater, light etc. Well the thing is I'm concerned about the quality of my HOBF. Its a Aqua-Tech 5-15 filter but the filter media doesn't seem to fit into it right and of course its from wal mart so I assume its the cheapest possible. I was thinking of buying a Whipser 10-30 HOBF but I was wondering how much stronger its gonna be if its gonna suck my platys or serpae tetras up.

If the filter you're planning to buy has a flow adjuster, put it at minimum and you'll be fine. I have the same starter kit from walmart. The filter was ok, but the light is insufficient for anything other than Java Fern. The heater also broke very quickly.

I'm curious, what happened to your heater? Mine doesn't seem to be calibrated right as the thermometer always reads 2-3 degrees F higher than what the heater is set to.
