The Gobiidae is the largest (or at least one of the largest) families of fish. Or indeed of any vertebrate. There are something like 2000 species. Probably more. Their range of habits are astonishingly diverse, from gobies that basically live on land (mudskippers) to gobies that act as cleaner fish on coral reefs (neon gobies). Most are more or less plankton feeders taking small things that drift by. Many also sift the substrate for algae and small invertebrates. A fair number are predators. The smallest are around 1 cm long, the biggest over 50 cm. Some are schooling fish, others fiercely territorial. Some live in blackwater streams, others ice cold lakes, yet others mangrove swamps.

What I'm saying is that trying to generalise about gobies is like to trying to sum up cichlids in one line. You can't. So what's the goby you're interested in? The bumblebee goby is the most commonly traded one, but violet gobies, knight gobies, and various sleeper gobies are common as well. All have different needs. Once you know which goby you're seen for sale, we can offer some more precise info.

And please, it would be really cool if you could spell words the traditional way. "Would" instead of "Wud" and so on. Does it really wear a person's fingers out typing things properly?

Cheers, Neale
