I have been going round the houses on this one for ages but just can't get any where. I have a 4 foot, 33 US gallon tank being set up in a primary school entrance hall. Currently its only inhabitant is a brown bristle nose. I was looking to go for:

4 Boesemani Rainbows
4 Congo Tetras

But having done some reading am worried that the tank is not really big enough for the congos. I really want to keep the rainbows and feel that I just about have space but has anyone got any other suggestions of what will go well with them. Needs to be colourful, not too skittish and active during the day as the kids will lose interest otherwise.

My current ideas include maybe a school of tiger barbs or maybe glowlight tetras. What do you guys think?

:good:

glowlights would be good.
others would be harliquin rasboras, yoma danio D.feegradei
pearl danio, most other rainbows.
also consider some type of albino fish, so the children can learn about albinoisum.

You could get some more rainbowfish, but of different and contrasting colours.
Try Reds, Glossolepis incisus; Banded, Melanotaenia trifasciata; Dwarf neon blues, M. preacox or Dwarf black-lined, M. maccullochi.
Also have a look at a small plec and some Corydoras (robineae or sterbai would look great).

Or as an alternative to corydoras, maybe some loaches.
As you need to maintain the kids' interest levels in the tank, I would suggest a shoal of dwarf loaches - for the simple fact that they are often seen swimming & shoaling above the surface and aren't as skittish as some loaches.
For more info on them click here -

There's also a link to a useful guide to keeping loaches from the botia genus at the bottom of that page

Are you saying that the loaches can fly?

Because then they would be interesting for the kids!

Oops! Well spotted!!!
Of course, it should read 'they are often seen swimming & shoaling above the bottom of the tank' - unless the kids drop some LSD into the tank. In which case, the loaches might actually think they can fly!!!!

i have a 4ft tank stocking the fish written in my sig. a few months ago it housed 18congo tetras which thrived and showed full colors. from my experience congos will be really good display fish for the entrance hall. just make sure they have plenty of swimming space

siamese algae eaters are very agressive i'm suprised no1's told you yet
