I am ex British army, pongo is a term used to describe Canadian military personal.

Pongos are the army, boot necks are the marines.

My dad was a 'scaly back' pongo, and my husband was a boot neck :)

In that case I served in the Alpini, in Italy, in 1998/99.

My father served in the alpini in the '60s

My grandfather served in the alpini in WW2

My greatgrandfather did in WW1

I have mixed feelings. I have to admit that I enjoyed it, and my role was quite prestigious. Also I enjoy the particular cameraderie that comes with being an alpino, not to forget the continuing of the family tradition.

I do think that military service is a very effective way of making people independent, and in many many cases it does "straighten" people's character.

I also think it is an extremely expensive endevour that isn't worth its cost, especially considering how soldiers are becoming less "grunts" and more specialized professionals with very expensive and sophisticated equipment.

Maybe some kind of compulsory civil service, working in hospitals, hospices, schools, police stations and similar places wouldn't be amiss. They could help a lot (especially with paperwork) and get a glimpse of the real world. Who knows, they might get a better appreciation for authority and civilization...
