Hi, I was wondering if the tap water purifier on my fridge water or on the PUR pitcher that I have helps tap water involving fish. The pitcher has some kind of filter in it, and takes the edge off of the tap water. What does this remove? Would this benefit my fish tank at all?

Not too sure.

However, I doubt it would dechlorinate the water, and it wouldn't be able to purify enough of it for you to use in your tanks. :dunno:

I don't quite know what is removed though. I'm thinking heavy metals.

I think they remove mostly particulates. I don't think there is anything to remove metals or disolved chemicals but if you check the box the filter came in or the fridge manual it would probably say. If not you can always call the manufacturer. Is it a GE refrigerator?

edit: this is what it said on the GE website for their refrigerator filters:
"Reduces waterborne contaminates such as lead, crystosporidium and giardia
"

Yes, lead is harmful to any life, fish or human. The others are bacteria I believe. I doubt it would remove chlorine though. If you check the report from your municipal water supply it should show you the levels of the contaminants. If they are within the guidelines the extra filtration is probably not necessary, although it can't hurt and could be helpful. My water supply is good enough though. Everything is either 0 or well below the EPA guidelines.

There was a water purifying commercial where they showed a woman's abdomen swelling up and sarcastically stated "a little lead in your water is no problem". :p
