We have a lot of queries on how to combat algae etc but as we know it's better to attack the cause than to try to get rid of it.

Green algae for instance we know has a few causes one of which is too much or direct light.

I recently got the 'green light' from Mrs D (ok so I begged!) to have a four footer in the front room only now to find that sunlight falls directly on the tank for most of the morning. Within 2 days the front and most of the rocks went completely green  I didn't know what to do as where it is positioned is the only place it can be and Mrs D will not have the curtains drawn all morning.

I came up with a brilliant solution and it cost only a quid! I purchased from the Range 2 packets of sun screens, each containing 2 screens @49p each! Each screen is 12" x 15" with a single sucker in the middle and take seconds to place across the front of the tank. They allow light to pass through but practically stopped the algae growing immediately! The first person home simply takes them of but to be honest it doesn't look too bad anyways.

Just thought I'd pass it on to anyone in a similar position :good:

oooh well done :good: i have a tank in the conservatory that gets plenty of light and plenty of green algae and its a pain  are these sun screens like the ones you put in a car window?

Yes they are, maybe I should have made that clear. There are many types but the ones I refer to are a simple screen that springs out to an oblong shape, are a sort of black mesh with a single sucker in the middle. They are ones that are used for the side windows of a car. Available in most 'cheapy shops' or more expensively from Halfords
