USA,
My brother is a larger tank then what we have now for his graduation. Either a 30 or 55 gallon. My question is,

1. How much would a 30 or 55 gallon tank cost to make it saltwater.
2. What kinds of fish could go in the 30, or 50. Ones that arent that expensive though.
3. What about in a 10 gallon, or 15 gallon if he makes the 30 or 55 freshwater. How much would a 10 cost? a 15?
4. What kinds of fish could go in a 10? or a 15?

thanks

hey wrs, as far as the costs it depends on what you are planning on
keeping in them, and what you consider too much.as I said in another post,
you could start a 55 gal tank for maybe 300-350 dollars(not including the
tank and stand.) this would be a simple set-up, consisting of two HOB
filters(example would be an aqua-clear),a powerhead for water movement,
substrate(crushed argonite),a thermometer,a bag of salt,a salinity meter,
and a test-kit. but you would have to have a good understanding of marine
tanks and the maintenance of them. for a 30 gal, it may be 100$ less, but
with a smaller tank there is less room for error. so if you do not have much
experience with saltwater tanks, then do more research and look into a
live-rock/live sand set-up.the cost will be far greater, but a beginer will
have more success with a fish only tank with live rock than one without.
as far as fish stocking goes, there are a lot of fish that are hardy, but for
a 10 or 15 gal.,you would maybe be able to keep 1or2 smaller species at
the most.

i think ill stay away from saltwater then, lol.

hey wrs, I'm just giving you an opinion, you should wait and see what
others suggest and recommend, then take all of that and then decide what
you want to do.

I have a 10 gal reef with 1 fish. So far i have invested around $400 in it. Its been up for a bit over 2 months now, and still is not stocked completely. I also will be upgrading my filter and adding a refugium, so that will no doubt raise my total investment. Its definately worth it IMO, not only do i want to give them the best possible environment, but i simply love staring at the tank at 3 am!!!!!

well if you dont wana spend much, but you dont wana go nano, you could have a 50G and section it off so you only do like 10G at a time...? -_- little bit at a time going from side to side... any one ever done that? aslo you can save youself alot of moneying diy-ing if you make th light you can save 50-300$ right there (if you want coral)
