here is the story. i have a dog called buzz that is a collie sheppard cross he is five now..... anyway a freind if my mums passed away the other day :/ and her family do not want the dog. he is also five and a rough haired terrier so about half size of buzz.

buzz is king pin in our house and is quite a jealous luittle thing (he wouldn't hurt another dog just barks) we might be getting this terrier dog but are just wondering how buzz will be.... we dont want to put his nose out of joint! cheers all

Best bet is to do a slow introduction. If your dog is territorial, have them do a meet and greet away from the home, like a dog park. Somewhere they can safely be off leash and interact on their own terms. If all goes well, bring the little guy into your home and let them interact there as well. If your dog just will not tolerate the smaller dog, is aggressive towards it, depending on the degree of aggression, chances are good they won't mix well. However, if your dog tolerates it, not necessarily takes to the little dog or plays but at least tolerates its presence in the home, chances are better it'll work in the long term. Just take the introductions slowly and keep a close eye on them.

MAM was right. We always suggest when someone is taking a dog home from our shelter, to make sure they meet on neutral territory that neither is familiar with. Then take them in the house together. And also get two sets of bowls and everything, new beds, so there's not much that the older dog can treat as his own and guard. Good luck!
And it's wonderful that your'e taking him in! A lot of people would have just taken him to a shelter.

And are they both neutered?

Our dog is the same way. She is a poodle-shiztu mix, weights about 18 lb and OWNS the house. We have had her almost 4 years. She doesn't want any other animals in the house (if she could figure out how to get rid of the fish,, she would). My wife would love to have another dog but I keep telling her that I don't think Trixie will ever accept another dog (or cat) into the house.
