Some of you may have read some of my previous posts, i currently have a 5 gallon tank that used to have a betta in, but unfortunatly he died 2 days after we got him.

We did water tests and learnt that the level of nitrates was dangerously high, so we assumed that this was the reason the first betta had died

after doing a few water changes and testing the water twice a day all our water stats were reading normal, so we bought another betta and popped him in there

again, 2 days after getting him, he died. Water stats were normal (will re post later when i do another water test) so im really stumped. He looked fine but he slowly started to loose his 'shine' on the second day, he started to turn brown and his fins looked quite bad (shredded)

There were no other symptoms, he looked ok but started to get a bit sluggish then his colour and fins started deteriorating.

Im at my wits end already with this tank. I've decided to start again with the tank, and use water from my established tank to get it running again, ill leave it for a while then decide what im going to do with the tank.

I just thought id post because im abit worried about what happened. The first one i thought it could be coloumairs (sp) but after what happened to the second one i think it could be something else

Sorry for the essay guys im really gutted the second betta died, he wasnt eating on the second day either :-(

Could the second one have been sick when you brought him home? If not it may be something in your tank. Before you put another fish in, take everything out and sterilize it. This might help.

Sorry for your loss. It sucks when they die and you have no idea why. If only fish could talk.

usually a fish showing brown colour is due to ammonia and this is the skin healing. its called melanophore migration and because you have only had him a short time the damage was done before you got him.
it just seems the fish you are buying are sick before you get them.

I throughly checked them over when i bought them, i bought them because they were bright eyed, very active and their colours seemed to be bright and vibrant (very healthy looking in other words lol)

I just dont understand how the water stats read normal, yet he dies the following morning

Tank is going to be emptied, sterlised and re started with cycled water from my established tank, ill leave it to run for a while and do water tests everyday, perhaps the stats fluctuated which caused damaged to the fish

I dunno, i really dont know :-(

maybe something in your tank is letting a chemical off that your testing stuff isnt picking up? try leaving every thing out an slowly adding stuff in. or buy some different stuff.

maybe even the stress from the travel?

or the difference in pH between the shop water and your tank water?

something like that :/

sorry to hear about your betta

It could have been PH shock, the PH of the tank is about 7.2 i dont know what the water from my LFS is thou. It is a possibility :dunno:
