ive just up'd my tanks temperature to 30 deg C.

What would the recommended temps be?

There must be a optimum tempreature for the bacteria to grow but what it is I couldn't tell you. I wouldn't worry about 1 or 2 degrees to much and concentrate on getting the tempreature right for your fish/plants.

no fish at the moment and once the tank is cycling properly, it'll be running on ammonia top ups for a week - during which the temp is to be dropped to 26 deg for the little fishies.

PS, part of the Idea for this thread was to make a FAQ on fish cycling - new threads seem to be started on it every day

I do agree it covers alot. but at the same time, lacks a simple Question-Answer section to most of the questions being asked here. Otherwise there would be less questions on the cycle...

Your original question was about the temperature which is mentioned on that thread.

well spotted. Who knows how on earth i missed that... *looks guilty*....

lol the only reason I knew was because I've just completed my fishless cycle, did take a while to complete but well worth it!

How long did yours take?

Could you give the following info:

Size of tank (dimensions):
Temp of tank during cycle (roughly):
Initial Ammonia Value added (roughly):
Time taken to initially drop first time (roughly, e.g. 12 days etc):
Time taken to fully mature (roughly, e.g. 25 days):

Actually, it may interesting to do a proper collection of data from those doing fishless cycles to try and get a scietific base over it in order to gradually develop a trend basis on which decent timescales could be advised/process refined etc.

Well lets face it if its not started right the fish dont end up alright. It is a little but big topic

it is. however, raising the temp to encourage multiplication doesnt cause problems for the fish when it is lowered - the lowered temp should only inhibit bacteria growth slightly.

I tried to reply to this earlier but it looks as if I did something wrong as I don't see my reply. I don't know what the optimal temperature is to do a fishless cycle although I'm sure there is one. I have successfully cycled at 85 and 92 so both worked. The increased temperature indeed does encourage bacteria growth. I would imagine that it would be even better at 100F but that's only a guess. I will probably try that when I start experimenting after the holidays provided my heater will go that high. If you have live plants though, there may be a temp that becomes a problem for them.

i would imagine so for the plants too. my tank has now nicely levelled at 33C or roughly 92F (not sure, my F scale on the digital reads doesnt go that high and I never look at the F on the analogue thermo.

Hopefully this will quicken the pace a little bit. I dunno, just getting the cold feet at lack of changes I suppose, probably brought on by the lack of a good initial source - get the feeling that without a good source, it takes a long long time

Size of tank (dimensions): 18 x 12 x 10
Temp of tank during cycle (roughly): 87 C
Initial Ammonia Value added (roughly): upto 4ppm
Time taken to initially drop first time: 11
Time taken to fully mature (roughly, e.g. 25 days): 25

Good idea to try to get a rough estimate from what other peoples tanks have done but it depends on the person really.

They could mis read the level of ammonia they raised it upto (very easy to do!), different temperatures, different sized dropper used, live plants added, filter media from established tank, substrate..... the list is endless!
