Annoyance Over Pm's

i think it was time this was brought up.

i am getting really frustrated with the 1 PM rule. I know it stops spammers but if iwant to contact a couple of members or have a chat with one member (where you and them both reply quickly) you cannot send another one for ages and end up waiting.
if the rule could be adjusted slightly to two Pm's in a short time, that would IMO be alot better.
Its the same if you are buying/selling, if you have several people to Pm you have to wait ages again.
i dont want this thread to turn into an argument, slanging match, or slagging off any other members/admin, it is a simple thought put to the mods.

Any feedback would be greatly recieved.

i cant see nicks suggestion being a problem...how many PM attacks were there before the new rule? not many! IMO that is

it is really difficult trying to chat or close a deal. i think that instead of having it for all members...what about members that have 100 posts or more having unlimited PM's?

I completely agree with having a time delay. But I also completely agree that raising it to 2 PMs every 3 minutes wont give spammers any sort of edge.

Spammers could send a maximum of 40 PMs an hour MAX...not really profitable time useage I don't think...

truck has a good idea, over 100 posts and it should be ok, if you have proven yourself to be of some use on the forum. 1 message every 3 minutes or whatever it is, is a joke.

i hope the mod team can address this.

i agree very difficult when you are selling things - i've had several questions about the snails i'm selling - takes blooming ages to respind to the all - pain in the butt --

I know its needed - but cant there be a instant messenger bit added to the sales section - or some other way of doing it just in sales section

If the pm delay is too constraining for a fast moving conversation why not use the chat room? It moves as fast as you can type & hit the enter button.

The delay was an upgrade provided by Invision Power Board, as many of the IPB forums were hit by the same spammers. The delay is an across the board program, no exceptions, I deal with it, everyone deals with it. It is either on or off, with an adjustable time limit.

You have to understand that the spammers are not sitting there sending messages, they set up a program, and let it run until it is discovered. They set up multiple accounts, so 20 per hour times 10 accounts equals 200 in an hour. The reason you don't see much spam here at all is because the mods are paying attention to newly registered members, among all the other things happening here, and I am running members through a spammer ID database before they get to post. Often spammers are shut down before they post due to this.

I'll run bringing reducing the delay time up to the moderating team, as if we get another influx of spammers they and I will be the ones who have to deal with it. In the mean time the chat room is always open, you can have a private conversation via the chat room, with no delay whatsoever.

i understand spammers are a real pain - have been a chat mod in many chat room sites and the spammers (via programs) have flooded the chats and crashed the site - also attacked the onsite mail boxes

The flip side of "allow members with over 100 or 200 or (any other specific number) of posts PM faster" is that a spam-bot can easily post 100 or 200 or any number of posts to the forum before going checked. We don't have 24 hr / 365 day monitoring of the forum -- even with as international as the moderating team is. Even beyond that, we are all volunteers, and have lives and won't necessarily be able to catch every one.

So... to prevent post-bots from doing their thing, there would have to be a significant delay between posts. How many complaints about that would there be? I suspect far, far more than complaints about delays between PMs. This forum has many, many times more posts made per day (and yes some members fire them off very rapidly) than PMs.

It is a classic darned if you darned if you don't fix. At the moment, the PM delay seems like it is doing its job as best as can be expected.

I have to agree, it can be annoying. Are you able to make private chat rooms in chat? What if you want to have a private conversation?

Yes, you can. You can go the whole hog and set up a room with ops, password access etc. if you want, but all you really need to do is type /join #channel name, making the channel name whatever you like. And obviously checking it doesn't already belong to somebody.
