Can a Penguin 170 over power an Angelfish? I just put mine in, and they are staying failry close to the filter intake, and will occasionally drift right into it, although it seems like they are in control because they will also sometimes swim around in the tall plants. Are they strong swimmers? Or will this be a problem?

They might not be used to a stronger current that all, if it's not blowing them around should be fine, face the outlet pipe towards the glass, that should help.

It's a HOB, they wont get sucked up will they? They actually seem like strong swimmers, and they sometimes just swim away into the plants to play. But it makes me nervous to see them hovering past the intakes.

Not used to your filters , you might be better off placing this in freshwater chit chat, you will get more replies.

Maybe for a while you could put a sponge around the intake to lessen the amount of suction. That helped my baby barbs and platies from being sucked up

no worries. thats what we are here for.

Just keep in mind... I dont know the slightest thing about angels, I'm only guessing that what works for other fish will work for them. Im sure I will be doing the exact same thing after I buy some

Unless they are really small, peas size body or less, I wouldn't be too worried. All the lfs around here sell them dime size or bigger, Ive had dime size in with various hob & cannister filters with no problem.
