Why are my angels hiding in the rocks??? They didn't do use to do that.

(On another note......thought angels would eat tetras? So far, the angels have left the tetras alone. Been together 2 weeks now!

By the way, how do I know the angel males from the females?

Are your water parameters good? If not, they could be stressed and skittish.

Might be electrical current running through your tank. (This is a lot more common than people realize)

Do you have any barbs in there with them that might be nipping at them?

The tetras might be to fast-moving for their liking? (Not sure about this one, just a thought)

Angels will eat tetras sometimes. Might be later on or they might co-exist, but it does happen if they can get to them.

Not sure about the sexing. Hopefully someone else can lend their expertise and help.

i can only answer one of your questions tthe angelfish might or might not snack on the tetras have you seen any nipping? :alien: :alien:

One way I know of sexing angels is by looking at their forehead. Males foreheads tend to be more vertical and females tend to slope up gradualy. Hope this helps. Its easier to see the difference if you have two of different sex, but if you have two the same it can be difficult :/

Hi Dave

Your Angels are probably hiding due to water problems, as Smb said.

Angels will only eat tetras when they are very large, smaller angels will leave them alone.

It is possibal to sex adult angels, but not accuratly. Even us expert angel breeders get it wrong, by going on body shape. The only 100% way to do it, is when they are spawning.

Checked the water first thing. It's OK. They only come out when I feed them. I tend to think the water current is too fast. Any ideas about how to slow it down. My filter has an adjustment but when I mess with it, it stops filtering!!! And yes, I did swap it because of that. It's a Regent by Aqua-Tech. Tried to get a spray bar attachment and no one carries them. Any suggestions for a replacement brand?

I would go with an Emperer 400. IMO, the best HOB filter there is.

I know that Angels don't like a lot of current, but don't really know much about your filter. I've never used it before.

I believe that the Regents don't allow you to take the carbon out? If I'm wrong, try running it without the carbon and see if it works when you slow it down. If it does, then you've found your problem and I just wouldn't use carbon anymore.

If you can't take the carbon out, which I don't think you can, then not sure what it can be since you said you replaced it and that didn't work.

Let us know what you decide to do.

with a regent filter, rip the blue fiber off of the cartridge. dump the carbon out of it and the use the plastic from the cartridge to hols some filter floss in place. I use that method with my emperor 400 and 280's with the carbon cartridges. I fill the alternate media cartridges with floss as well. water stays crystal clean. I just rinse the flos in tank water weekly and replace monthly.

edit: I'll agree that the emp. 400 is the best HOB filter money can buy!!!

Thanks for picking me up there, Tanked. B)

I do exactly what you do on the emp. 400. My water seems to be even more clear w/o carbon than it is when I use it. Or maybe it's just me thinking that because I don't much like carbon.

Do you seem to find that also?

:D Thanks! I never thought of taking out the charcoal. TOL.....If I keep my water changes regular, there shouldn't be any chemical buildup   therefore, no need for the charcoal :D :D :D

Bad duh brain day!!!!

:D Yep, the carbon does nothing that regular water changes won't do...except makes you waste more money on the ac.

Oh don't worry about that at all. We all have them. I think we all forget the little things, or the easiest solutions, most of the time. I know I'm guilty of that all the time. :D

:fun: Glad to know its not just me!!

Oh, as for the angels hiding, I think the female was just keeping the male company. I decided to move his hiding place and check him out to make sure there was nothing external going on and found that one of his lateral fins was partially missing. Kept him from swimming well. I went ahead and did a 25% water change since it was due anyway and added melafix to the water. Don't know which helped....but he's up and swimming around this evening. :D :D
