my friend has a 54 gallon tank with angels and swordtails in it. i thought angels prefered acidic water, and swordtails preferalkaline water. can one of the species adapt to a lower/higher ph level?

Fish can adapt, and swords are hardy, but keeping fish in conditions that are not suited to them will likey lead to less resistance to illness and shorter lifespans.

Swords can and will live in a PH of 7.8......I have had Swords from day one and they do fine.
Watch them around the angels as I have seen that the Swords get nippy towards them......I have never seen it but then again I have never had angels

i don't want to keep both angels and swordtails if one or both species' health will suffer. maybe it is better if i have one or the other in the tank :(

i thaught swords where quite resistant to different water chems in terms of life spans. also i was surprised that the swords might be considered a threat to the angels and not the other way round i heve never kept angels. one day i must find out more about them and keep some as i am impressed by the beuty of the spcimins i have seen here. very informative

One thing to keep in mind here................

Most fish available to the hobbyist are tank reared and are so far removed from their wild ancestors that it simply does not matter!!!!

There are a few exceptions...such as if you are breeding discus, but for the many tropicals available IMO there is no need to worry about adjusting the ph!!!

One should strive, however to provide as close a ph to the water the fish were in at the LFS. This, IMO is more important than worrying about what the fishes natural ph is in the wild where the fish has never been!!!

NOTE*.............when adjusting the ph, it is recommended to go no higher than 0.02 degrees per 24 hour period!!

hmm thats interesting, cichlidmaster. i'll be sure to find out what ph my lfs has their swords and angels in.

when adjusting the ph, it is recommended to go no higher than 0.02 degrees per 24 hour period

is this only when there is fish or plants in the aquarium? because rite now i have only water and decorations. does it matter how much i raise the ph by?
