I just got a couple angelfish today and I saw that one of them has a bent.. umm, whatever the long thread like thing is called I couldn't find the name of it. It's bent up. He appears to be swimming alright of course I'm still acclimating him. Any ideas?

its a ventral fin. its fairly common to find this problem and is probably caused by overcrowding at a young age.

Oh okay. Since you didn't say he's doomed I'm assuming he should be alrigt?

Thats good. :) It's funny one of my angels is staring at himself and the other is hiding from me hehe.

i'm interested to know what the gravel is you have? is it normal stuff or does it have something in it? i'm getting a new tank for my angels tomorrow and i would like something other than normal gravel and sand.
i love angels, they are so full of personality.

It's Seachem Flourite, for plants. Also, that one angelfish with the bent ventral fin is hanging on the bottom. Do angels usually relax on bottom for a while till they are settled? He's kind of standing now, his tail is to the ground and his mouth is facing up. It doesn't look good.

The angel could just be getting acclimated to your water, which may be different from the lfs. Leaving the lights dimmed usually helps.

The bent ventral could be from overcrowding, a bit of rowdy fishplay, or just a birth defect. Usually overcrowding results in a chopped or bent dorsal fin.

Sometimes Angelfish have swim bladder problems...I bought my golden angelfish when she was little, and whenever she sleeps she sleeps leaning over to one side a lot. Its just a balance issue usually. I have had her for a year, and she is perfectly fine except for the fact that she has an obsession with food!

The one that didn't have any problems is swimming around happily in the top half of the tank. :) The one with the bent fin looks good he's kind of just swimming in place at the bottom of the tank. Hopefully he'll be alright.
