Ever since my angelfish bred two weeks ago the larger of the two (not sure whether male or female) has been lying at the bottom of the tank. :(

I moved her/him to a quarantine tank and on further inspection the left fin is badly torn so he cannot stay upright for long. I have treated for finrot & fungus, is there anything else I can do ?

He/she is still eating which is good but how long before the fin will grow back and he can be returned to the main tank ? I suspect the fin was torn on a sharp bit of rock which has now been removed from the tank.

i would say treat with melafix and ensure water is absolutely perfect all the time.. meds for torn fins etc is not always a good idea. usually all is needed is lots (and i mean loads) of water changes and melafix. have you got a quaranteen/hospital tank?.

clean water is the key for injuries

**edit** sorry i was usuming it was an injury... how did it happen? do you know?

Thanks for the advice........ :D

The angelfish is in a hospital tank, I think the injury was due to a sharp rock which has been removed.

Before I treated for finrot I was changing about 10%-20% each day but now I'm not doing any !!!!!

Water quality is fine but should I continue with daily water changes or more ? What is melafix ? :dunno:

I have just looked up Melafix on the net, will get some tomorrow. Thanks

yes i would keep up with water changes as often as you can if he/she is in a hospital tank. perfect water and melafix should do the trick.

melafix is NOT a med. its purely tea tree oil. it works wonders.

its available (and cheaper) in places like pet(notso)smart ;)

I've seen a lot of praises for Melafix on this board. Curious... does it get rid of body fungus, fin rot, etc... or does it just aid in repairing torn fins or fins damaged from fin rot and the like?

Heresmike,

Bought Melafix today to treat my Angelfish so I'll let you know how it goes.

According to the label it claims to heal open wounds and ulcers, rapidly restore damaged fins, stops mouth fungus, treats fin and tail rot, treats eye cloud, does not affect pH, safe for invertebrates and will not harm the biological filter..... :flex:

.....sounds good to me...... I'll let you know if its as good as it sounds after a week or so...

Melafix is good - I like it a lot, but I should caution that it's not the solution for advanced or particularly bad cases of fin rot or fungus. It can also be dangerous if you put in more than the suggested amount.

Sometimes you simply have to use strong meds to cure these problems.

Best wishes to your angelfish :)
