i have an angel fish in my tank, usually very healthy, tho tonight when i went to turn out lights, noticed one of her eyes were swollen

she hasnt been herself last day or so

is this 'popeye' and if so, how do i treat?

all other fish are fine, is this contagious?

has included some pics, hopefully can show problem

Try some myxazin that treats pop eye and other bacterial infections, not sure if it is pop eye as i thought the eye also goes cloudy if it has this?

Best thing to do is wait for wilder to diagnose :good:

But for now until someone with knowledge comes on keep the water clean add myxazin if you have some it wont do any harm

Please fill this out to help us help you.

Popeye is a bacterial issue. I'm guessing you are from the UK, unfortunately antibiotics for fish must be prescribed by a vet over there.

its a vision 180 so 180l tank

params are: ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 60, ph 6.0.. nitrates and ph arent too good are they?

temp is 28. other fish in tank are: 3 small clown loach, a pakistani loach, reed fish, knife fish and a pleco, they are all great, eating well and no sign of any illness

angel is eating well and seems healthy apart from the eye prob

i do 25% water changes every fortnight and clean filter media in old tank water once a month, i usually add water conditioner when doing water changes, but havent these last couple changes as ran out

and havent done any water tests in a while either, and have been overfeeding a bit, could this be the reason for nitrate rise?

ive now done a 30% water change with conditioner and cleaned filter sponges in old water, will cut down feeding as well

i have bought melafix, will i start using that?

or wait until tomorrow and test water again?

how do you get ph levels up? ive always seemed to have probs with ph, but doesnt seem to bother fish?

thanks for any advice given :good:

Even though some people say that nitrates should stay below 40ppm, there has been a study that says that fish can tolerate upto 400ppm. Me thinks I read that CFC keeps his fish with 40ppm without problem, but you'll have to check.

PH shouldn't be a problem, unless your PH has suddenly dropped to 6. Overfeeding will cause problems, so I would cut back a bit. As for the pop eye itself.. I'm afraid I can't help you here. I've never encountered it before.

*EDIT* what is your tanks 'normal' PH ?

like ive said, has been a while since i did any water tests, i think my ph has always been around 6-6.5. i just thought that it was bit too acidic for fish, but they seem to have no probs with it.

i am going to cut back on feeding for a while, and get my levels down again, thats the first time they have risen like that,

i am going to check water params tomorrow and maybe a water change, and then treat with the melafix and see how the angel does

so fingers crossed, everything stays stable, and the eye gets better :good:

Melafix wont help you fish its for cuts etc not bacterial infections.Try myxazin that way your treating a larger aspect of bacteria not just one thing

Anti internal bacteria med by interpet.

let me know how you get on with the treatment as one of my angles has the same problem
but the other is unafected

well after a week of water changes, she seemed to be on the mend, still eating etc

her swollen eye was going down gradually, however...

yesterday, she was having difficulty breathing, and the other fish was pecking at her, stressing her 0ut

so i have moved her to a quarantine tank, and treating her with melafix.

shes swimming upright again, and her breathing has improved

i think shes suffering from a secondary infection as a result of her eye being swollen

so hopefully she wont go downhill

anybody any advice?

The quar tank is the best idea, keep up on water changes, this is more important than the melafix. I would continue the med Wilder suggested for at least 10 days, this assures that it is knocked back, and prevents any drug resistant strains from popping up.

Med availability is different in different countries, good antibiotics are hard to come by in the UK, and usually require a prescription from a vet. I have cured many angel ailments with daily 50% water changes for 7-10 days, this is why a smaller quar tank is good for when problems arise. Half of a 10 gallon daily is a piece of cake.

thanks for advice, i just couldnt leave her in main tank to die

shes still alive and thats the main thing i spose

if she started to look as if she was suffering, i would consider euthanising her

but shes a fighter, and i will give her every chance

i will continue the water changes, and monitoring her

how long can she do without food, before i should start worrying?

I would rather you use the anti internal bacteria med then melafix.
More concerned about her breathing as thats a bad sign.
Has she lost alot of weight due to not eating.

she hasnt lost weight as far as i can see, no shrunken in sides

last time i seen her eat would be def last thursday, so not that long ago

ive not really been using the melafix, her breathing has improved, tho is stayin more at the top of the quarantine tank, but is not gulping air or anything

ive been keeping up the water changes, and did raise to temp abit to about 81/82

but turn an airstone on as well to aerate the water

her eye isnt swollen much, but does look very cloudy and sore?

any ideas?

i will go and get her the internal bacteria med today

also, just noticed she has a very fine whitish string of poo? whats that? internal parasites??
