Angel gender?

Hi! I know this is a long shot and that it's often really difficult to tell but we've been wondering what gender our angel, Merlin is? They're going to keep the name either way lol but it would be good to know.

We get this question a lot, for a good reason. It's extremely hard to tell from a photograph, and I'm sorry to say most answers will have a 50% chance of being right.

It isn't a great picture you want to see more of the under-side to see if the breeding tube is showing. I lean towards male because of the hump but some females do have humps.

As you can see, 50%. The breeding tube will often be very hard to see in a fish kept alone. I would say you should randomly decide on a gender, and by Murphy's Law, it will be wrong.


Merlin's a fancy bred angel with extraordinary long fins, and the drag they create can lead to a hump of muscle to support the weight, so you are no farther ahead. It's just a mystery.
