I have been reading that an anemone's surroundings are the most important factors to consider in order to keep a nem happy and healthy. I understand that you can find anemones at differing light levels and flow rates in the same area and of the same species, but the type of home they require whether it be a crevice in a rock, or a flat sandy sea bed, is the key factor to success with a nem. Food and light can be adapted too, if it is a slight change; but a nem is not adaptable to a vastly different substrate. Anemones are almost impossible to acclimatise to a home aquarium without consideration to their specific needs.

According to the site where I have read the above info, the need for specific material for a nem to attach its foot is hardwired and non-negotiable; or it will never settle, roaming the tank in search of what it needs.

A few months ago I had a atlantic nem. It was completely white and in a suprisingly short space of time in my tank it regained its colour and trebled in size; unfortunately it took a few chromis so it was rehomed. I then purchased a Malu.

I know it will be a battle to look after.

I have read conflicting info on which substrate would best match my Malu; rock, sand, rubble. Any advice in this area would be greatly appreciated. If I can match an area of my tank to a malu's native environment, I may avoid the wandering most people experience with malu's.
