We are looking for some help with our tank. We have had the tank one month and waited two weeks after the plants went in before adding our first fish and performed numerous water tests with our local aquarium shop prior to adding fish.

One week later both ancistrus appeared to be very subdued (compared to first couple of days of their activity). On the 6th day we noticed that one ancistrus had a very bloated or distended stomach. Two days later we woke to find him unfortunately dead. The second ancistrus is now exhibiting similar signs and we are very concerned.

We have been feeding the guppies on dried pellets and dried larvae supplied by our local aquarium shop. All other fish appear to be well. In fact the Corydorus pair have mated and we now have approx 50 (that we know of) eggs.

Can anyone help us to understand why we have lost one ancistrus and what we can do to correct the problem (as we assume there is a problem).

Jon and Jane

Tank size = 100 * 45 * 30 (currently filed with 85 litre of water)

Current inhabitants:
2 * Corydorus
1 * Ancistrus Dochip
6 * Red Platy Coral Guppies
6 * Blank Mollie Lyre Guppies

We only have paper litmus strips for water tests but here are the latest readings:

NO3 - 20
Nitrites - 0
PH - 8
TH - 30 (indicating hard water)

Do you mean A. dolichopterus, Starlight Bristlenose?
I just happened to have pulled up this article at PlanetCatfish. See Adaptability.
