Has anyone ever heard of an anaconda eel? I can't find information on the internet about it. I saw one at the petstore today while i was looking for female rams, it was pretty cool looking.

Never heard of one, any chance of a description?

Yeah, has the same figure as a fire eel, peacock eel, all of those. As for coloring, it actually is like a faint snake like coloring. I guess like an anaconda hence the name.

Yeah hes freshwater, i'm stumped though, I have been looking online for a couple hours now.

Was it this guy? i did an advance search for this eel and it doesn't appear to exist. it likely has another name, most lfs will do that if they arnt quite sure what exactly it is.

Markings are very much alike, but this guy is way darker. Its hard to see his markings too. He was $15.00 by the way.

This is a Tyre-track eel also known as a spiney eel. this ones not mine altho i do have one.
very greedy and can get to arount 3-4 foot in length!

This sounds like a fish store name invented to make the fish sound more exciting.
It's most likely one of the spiney eel family, the most commonly found being the fire eel, tire track eel and peacock spiney eel.

Either way, I went to the pet store and got him. I told them that when I found out what it was, if it got too big for my liking then I'm going to bring him back. They had no issues with it, so I brought him home and as soon as I get this picture thing to work I will send a link.

Hi there,
It appears that you just purchased a Mastecembelus armatus, commonly known as a tyre track eel (although the name "Anaconda" eel might suit this animal justly :shifty: )

Given proper conditions, a tyre track can gain up to an inch per month, usually reaching/slightly exceeding 3 ft in length when fully grown. Tyre tracks are probably the most predatory of the spiny eels- although very peaceful they will prey upon smaller fish when given the opportunity.

Even when small, they should be housed in as large a tank as possible, eventually requiring 180+ gallons (oh, and it's not easy catching these guys either).

I have had my tyre track for 8 months, he was five inches when I got him and is now nearly a foot. He eats blackworm, chopped earthworm, the occasional mealworm (w/heads cut off, of course), frozen bloodworm (sometimes), molly fry, and guppies. This does not include the $$some of fish that were not intended for his meals, nor the failed attempts at expensive dinners too big for him to swallow .

Tyre tracks can be fantastic fish to keep if you have the tank space. Good luck.
