I've sucessfully ID'ed them... and got one for $15....

They are not carnivorous....

they are...

BLUE VAMPIRE SHRIMP :hyper:
I thought these only came in brown, but the distinctive armor and the fan feeding indicates clearly.
Great contrast he'll make with my red bamboo shrimp who's a little bigger than him right now

:good: Pictures? :) Sounds really cool. I would imagine the colour just depends on the conditions.

I'm going to get a vampire shrimp when i upgrade my tank, so any first hand information would be great :) .

So far he's just been into hiding, but I hear vampires like to do that.

My lfs had him labled as a "marble blue wood shrimp", but it has the distinct armor and fore legs (thick ones) that wood/bamboo do not have.

He's pretty darn cool, and pics will be up after christmas when I get my camera :hey:

Are you talking about the Camaroon Shrimp (Atyopsis gabonensis)? Like this one here?

about how relativly big is that?

and the front legs are less defined, but it is similar. But it's a lighter color too.

It doesn;t have the hair either.

More reasearching makes it apparently so.
How much do these usually cost and how common are they?

The above photo is obviously almost (if not already) fully grown. So younger specimens will be lighter in colour, less chunky & hairy. My one shops sells them almost all the time (brown, blue or white) and are around £10 each (equivalent of $19 but you can't compare £ - $ really) - depending on size. Lovely docile shy shrimp - but do grow very large.

they grow to over 15cm .

perfect bottomdweller then for my caves!

What difference from the vampire shrimp is there then? I can see none other than color.

They are vampire shrimp, same species :) . I've found with most inverts, colours within the same species depends on what conditions they are kept in. Also i've seen that they gain more colour as they get older, but this still depends on the conditions :good: .

So Camaroon Shrimp and vampire shrimp are pretty much one in the same?

It's tough comparing common names(because shops often use the wrong ones), but yes - they are the same.
